Historically, the Nushagak has hosted runs of over 100,000 King Salmon. However, recent years have seen 20-year lows across Alaskan drainages. When average harvests crash 82% below historical markers, you can no longer rely on sitting at a single lodge hoping the fish show up.
Our massive aviation footprint and pre-deployed jet boat fleets allow us to act dynamically. If the Kings aren't holding in the lower Nushagak, we pull up and fly 100 miles to intercept a massive push of Sockeye elsewhere in the Bristol Bay watershed. We dictate terms to the river, not the other way around.

Defending 56 Million Sockeye.
The Bristol Bay watershed is the largest remaining wild sockeye salmon fishery on earth, regularly seeing over 50 million fish return in a single summer. Its economic output exceeds $215 million, sustaining thousands of jobs and endless indigenous cultures.
For years, this ecosystem was threatened by the proposed Pebble Mine. Newhalen Lodge, alongside our industry partners, stood the line to protect this watershed. The EPA's recent Clean Water Act Section 404(c) veto was a monumental victory for the fishery, but we remain vigilant. Every fish we catch and release is a testament to what we are fighting to save.
