Every week at Newhalen Lodge offers a different fishing program. The Bristol Bay watershed is one of the most productive salmon systems on earth — understanding the timing is what separates a good week from an extraordinary one.
June
Early Season
The biggest of all five Pacific salmon arrive first. June 7–25 is prime. Trophy kings pushing 50–80 lbs run the Nushagak drainage.
Pre-spawn rainbows are aggressive on streamers. Water is cold and clear — ideal streamer conditions before egg patterns dominate.
Early-season grayling on surface and nymphs throughout the watershed.
July
Peak Season
The Bristol Bay sockeye run is the largest on earth. Mid-July sees millions of fish stacking the Kvichak and tributary drainages. Swung flies, beads, and leeches are the program.
Late kings available through early July. Trophy specimens still accessible.
Sockeye egg drop supercharges rainbow feeding. Bead and egg patterns produce the largest fish of the season as trout stack below salmon redds.
Char follow the salmon into the river systems in July, targeting the same egg patterns as rainbows.
Dog salmon begin their run mid-July — massive, aggressive fish on large bright streamers.
August
Premium Season
Coho arrive in August in chrome-bright condition — the most acrobatic Pacific salmon, known for violent takes and aerial displays. Streamers and poppers.
Massive volumes of humpies entering the system. Great action on light tackle and fly rods.
Late August — fresh salmon eggs everywhere. Rainbow trout are at maximum feeding aggression. Largest fish of the year routinely caught.
Char reach peak condition in August following the salmon. Deep pools and braided channels produce trophy fish.

September
Late Season
Fresh silvers still arriving through mid-September. Some of the largest coho of the year appear in the late run.
September is arguably the best month for trophy rainbows. Fish are gorged on salmon carcasses and eggs, hitting maximum body weight before winter. 20–28" fish are common.
Late-season char are in peak fall coloration — red, orange, and gold bellies. Among the most beautiful fish in Alaska.

If trophy rainbows are your priority, target late August through mid-September. If you want the biggest volume of salmon in the net, July is your month. If king salmon are on the list, you need to be here by June 25. Tell us what matters to you — we'll put you in the right week.
